  • Riverland Student Handbook
    • Here are some guidelines for documenting your search:

You need to thoroughly document your research and cite your sources. Failure to do so is a violation of the Riverland Student Code of Conduct.

Your student handbook includes the following:

"Plagiarism, which is defined as using the words or ideas of another person as one's own, and includes but is not limited to unauthorized collaboration between students, copying published works, or copying data from the Internet. Submitting another individual's work or ideas as your own, including but not limited to, homework assignments, term papers, research reports, lab reports, group projects, tests, or class presentations. Paraphrasing without proper citation is also plagiarism. An individual who knowingly allows or assists another student to represent that individual's work as his/her own will be deemed to have collaborated in plagiarism and will be disciplined accordingly."

      Some examples of plagiarism:
o Using another's words or ideas without giving adequate credit (reference) - at its most blatant this includes copying another's paper, putting your name on another's paper, or lifting directly from text or Internet and putting in your paper

o Copying from a test or asking another student for a test answer

      o Copying someone else's work

o Taking a copy of a test if the professor has asked you to return it

      o Changing a grade

o Helping another student to do any of the above

Sometimes plagiarism happens accidentally by not being careful enough to appropriately cite sources either through sloppiness and/or due to time constraints. Take care when using sources and allow yourself enough time to do your assignments so you don't accidentally plagiarize.
